One of the longest running and most popular of all television westerns, Bonanza was both an action/adventure classic and family drama. For fourteen seasons,
audiences enthusiastically tuned in to see the High-Sierra adventures of the Cartwright clan. Nestled amongst the pines above the shores of Lake Tahoe is the
Ponderosa ranch, the thousand-acre home of Ben Cartwrignt and his sons, Adam, Hoss and Joe (aka "Little Joe.") Plots featuring revolving cast of interesting guest
players helped to set Bonanza apart from the usual gun-slinging formula Westerns of the day.

Created by producer David Dortort, the first ever color
series, Bonanza, premiered on Saturday, September 12,
1959. The show started with little recognition and eventually
was moved to a new Sunday night time slot. The series
then caught fire and became one of television's top rated
shows through most of the mid sixties. Its heroes were the
members of the Cartwright clan, owners of The Ponderosa,
the largest ranch in Nevada. Patriarchal bible-quoting Ben
Cartwright (Lorne Greene) had three sons: serious minded
Adam (Pernell Roberts), cheerfully oafish Hoss (Dan
Blocker) and impulsive "Little Joe" (Michael Landon).
Bonanza was a family show in more ways than one. The
program was not a traditional shoot-em-up western, it
relied more on the relationships of the four principal actors
and the people they came in contact with than it did on
violence. The adventures of these men, individually and
collectively, made up the continuing saga of Bonanza. For
three seasons in a row, 1964-1967, it was the number one
show on the air. After fourteen and a half years and 431
episodes, Bonanza finished second only to Gunsmoke as
history of television.

As one of the first and still most beloved westerns of all time, BONANZA told the story of life on the Ponderosa ranch for Cartwright patriarch Ben and his three
sons Adam, Hoss and “Little” Joe. Whether the action took place on the ranch or in nearby Virginia City, audiences could bet that they’d get a dose of drama,
action and down-home family entertainment. This five-DVD set is packaged in a specially-designed collector’s tin and contains over 12 hours of some of the
most memorable episodes in Bonanza’s stellar 14-season run.
