When M-G-M cast Olympic swimming champ Johnny Weissmuller in 1932's Tarzan the Ape Man, the vine-swinging jungle lord created by novelist Edgar Rice
Burroughs had already been portrayed on screen by five different actors. But eye-popping glimpses of wild animals, spectacular stunt sequences, and the
potent chemistry between Weissmuller and button-cute Maureen O'Sullivan (as Jane) made this Tarzan an unqualified hit and inspired a similarly successful
follow-up, Tarzan and His Mate (1934). The sequel is even better, sporting more action as well as a pronounced emphasis on idyllic eroticism -- perhaps
most vividly expressed in an exhibition of nude underwater swimming that was cut by censors but restored for this DVD release. Subsequent series entries,
beginning with Tarzan Escapes (1936), avoid such material in favor of family-friendly innovations like the couple's super-sized tree house -- outfitted with
jungle equivalents of familiar household devices -- and increased footage for the antics of Cheetah, Tarzan's chimpanzee companion. The trend toward
domesticity continues in Tarzan Finds a Son (1939), with five-year-old Johnny Sheffield playing the titular tyke, orphaned in a plane crash and adopted by
Tarzan and Jane. The studio's final two series entries, Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1941) and Tarzan's New York Adventure are quite up to the earlier films: a
restive O'Sullivan, who wanted out after the fourth film, is just going through the motions and the once-lithe Weissmuller has gotten appallingly beefy.
Nonetheless, these M-G-M Tarzans are still great fun. All six films have top-notch production values, sturdy supporting casts, and well-staged if sometimes
formulaic action sequences.

Beasts roar, danger abounds and Johnny Weissmuller swoops into the last 6 of his 12 adventures as film's definitive Tarzan. The vine swinger provides
World War II heroics in Tarzan Triumphs and Tarzan's Desert Mystery. Next, he welcomes Jane (Brenda Joyce) home and champions a secluded female
tribe in Tarzan and the Amazons. A deadly cult proves no match for the jungle lord in Tarzan and the Leopard Woman. And the Ape Man calls in elephants
to deal with poachers in Tarzan and the Huntress and rescues a pearl-diving community in Tarzan and the Mermaids. What came next? Weissmuller
would return to the wilds as Jungle Jim, Johnny Sheffield (Boy) became Bomba the Jungle Boy, Joyce played Jane again in Tarzan's Magic Fountain and
Cheetah became the world's oldest chimp, celebrating birthday 74 in 2006. Ungawa!
